Food Sensitivities - Why Some Foods Work and Others Don't

Having a food sensitivity is just that, your body reacting in certain ways when it encounters a particular food. And of course, all food sensitivities are dependent upon the person and what they can and cannot tolerate. Different foods have different symptoms so when one is sensitive to a certain food, it’s important to note which food and what it does to the body. Generally, having a food sensitivity is a result of a toxic response to the specific food or combination, which can be divided into two categories: a food intolerance or an allergic response. However, a diagnosis can be difficult because sometimes it can take up to two 2 days after ingesting the food for symptoms to start.

The biggest difference between food intolerances and food allergies is that food allergies involve the immune system while food intolerances do not. Food allergies are simply a toxic reaction to food or additives that involve the immune system. The body has cells that work together to protect itself against harmful foreign intruders. So, an allergic reaction will occur when your body identifies molecules as possibly harmful or toxic (these molecules are called antigens). A lot of times, when someone is having an allergic reaction, they will either break out into hives or have trouble breathing or some sort of swelling occurs. Other common symptoms of food allergies are vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, or a runny nose. Symptoms will depend on the person’s age, type of allergy (antigen), and how much of the food was ingested.

Food intolerances, as stated above, do not involve the immune system. A food intolerance can happen for many reasons, one being that your body does not have the ability to break down a certain molecule resulting in an intolerant response as the molecule moves down your intestinal tract. Being lactose Intolerant is probably one of the most common ones that people are aware of. This is where the body does not have the ability to digest lactose, which is a sugar found in milk making it nearly impossible for people who are lactose intolerant to eat dairy. Another type of intolerance that’s becoming prevalent is having a Gluten sensitivity, which is when gluten has a harmful effect on the body.

The best way to combat food intolerances is to take note of the foods that do not sit well with the body along with the symptoms that you’ve experienced while ingesting the particular food. Food allergies are much more serious as closing of the throat or having trouble breathing are potential symptoms, so it’s best to not eat those foods AT ALL if you’re suffering from an allergy. So, it’s easy to understand why you feel fine eating some foods and then horrible when you eat foods that do not react well with the body. It is also no secret that the cleaner and healthier you eat, the better you feel.

Here at Inspire Med Spa, to assist with these food intolerances we provide high grade digestive enzymes to help break down the foods that your body may not be able to handle as well as provide food allergy tests to see what allergies you have that you may not have thought otherwise.
